The State of the White Rhino

The white rhino’s journey over the last century has been one of extreme highs and lows. After rebounding from fewer than 100 individuals in the early 1900s to a peak of 21,000 in 2012, the species faced a renewed poaching crisis that slashed the population by nearly a quarter.

 

While recent years showed a glimmer of hope with steady growth in 2022 and 2023, the population faced a fresh setback by late 2024, with numbers dipping back down to approximately 15,752.
